Eleanor Love
born: April 16, 1828 in
Kilcar, Donegal, Ireland
died: January 22, 1901
in San Francisco, California
Liverpool March 23rd '54
My Dear Brother William,
I hasten to inform you that I, Ellen, and Elleanor Buchanan are to leave here tomorrow in the Caroline Tucker for America. Black star Line company.
Father, Mother, brother, and sister were well when we left home.
No more at present as it is drawing late and we must be up early in the morning.
I remain, your affectionate brother until death.
Samuel Love
The letter to the left was written by Samuel Love to his brother, William Dare Love, who was living in New York, informing him that he, sister Ellen (Eleanor was referred to as Ellen in all written records known to date), and their cousin, Elleanor Buchanan, were about to emigrate to the United States in 1854.
Family records indicated Ellen married David Felix, possibly in San Francisco. The following 1870 U.S. Census record shows the two residing separately in a San Francisco boarding house or apartment building as they would have been shown living together like the family listed just above them had they been a married couple. Note: the information regarding David and Ellen is marked in red.
The 1860 U.S. Census for New York City shows Ellen and brothers William, John, Richard and Samuel living together.
John married in about 1864, William and Richard both married in 1865 and Samuel got busy building a business.
This flurry of activity may have left Ellen feeling a bit at loose ends. Older sister, Frances Love Crawford was already living in San Francisco and brother Richard soon relocated there as well, so it is no surprise to find Ellen living in San Francisco as of 1870.
Further information about Ellen's life is limited to what may be gleaned from other census records and city directories.
1877 SF, CA City Directory: David Felix, carpenter, 715 Howard
Miss Ellen Love; 18 ½ Harriet
1878 SF, CA City Directory: David Felix, carpenter, 715 Howard
Miss Ellen Love, living at corner of 7th and Mission Sts.
1879 SF, CA City Directory: David Felix, agent: Hills Manual, 715 Howard
Miss Ellen Love; 142 ½ 4th St.
1880 SF, CA City Directory: David Felix, "canvasser" (census?), residence: St. David's House; David Felix does not appear in the 1880 U.S. Census for San Francisco, California;
1880 SF, CA City Directory: Elizabeth Love, dressmaker, residence: 71 Tehama; could this be Ellen Love?
1882 SF, CA City Directory: David Felix, no occupation, res: 64 Everett
Ellen Love is not shown in this directory or any other after this date
1900 USC David Felix born September 1839, 60 years old, widowed, agent - books; arrived in the US 1849 / 51 yrs in the U.S. David Felix is not shown in further census records;
From the above records, especially the last entry in which David Felix lists himself as "widowed" in 1900, while Ellen Love was still living, it appears the two were not married to each other. Ellen Love's obituary from January 22, 1901, in which her maiden name is used with no reference to having been married and her San Francisco City/County death record which lists her "Social Condition" as single provide further evidence she'd never been married. Both documents are pictured below.
