Margaret Gertrude Smith was born September 21, 1888 in Schell City, Bates County, Missouri, the daughter of Henry Thomas Smith and Sarah Jane Sigler. The family eventually relocated to Monroe County, Iowa near the Love farm where her future husband, Harvey Love, lived.
The Smith home was located on an access road that is still known today as "Stingy Lane." The road came by its name legitimately as it was about wide enough for one wagon track and the owners of the eight homes along it refused to give land to allow widening.

In her later years, Gertrude often spoke of how her beloved "Harve" would pick her up and the two would take long rides on Stingy Lane on a horse-drawn cart, and from time to time, take in a picture show in town.
Gertrude said she and Harve became engaged about a year before they let anyone else know. She wore her ring on a ribbon around her neck in order to keep the secret.

Harve and Gertrude had six children, Mildred Georgia, Richard Henry, Russell Everett, Dorothy Lucille, Frances Jean and James Robert.
The 1920 U.S. Census lists Harvey's occupation as "salesman for a bakery," but he also worked for the local power company.
James Harvey Love died August 6, 1952 and Mar-
garet Gertrude Smith Love died November 25, 1979.
