According to Samuel's great-nephew, Delbert Love, Samuel's father, James Hamilton Love, owned land in both Missouri and North Dakota, as a hedge against the ups and downs of retail sales and it is thought that Samuel may have been given farmland in North Dakota by his father.
According to Daphne's 1946 letter, the Loves lived in North Dakota for 7 years, then relocated to Everett, Snohomish County, Washington (where Samuel's sister, Eliza Anne Love McDonald and family were already living) in 1905. The 1910 U.S. Census shows Samuel Dare, Anna, their son James Thompson, and Anna's mother, Elvira, living in Everett. (John Thompson died December 6, 1907.) Samuel is shown as the owner of his own home and a grocer by trade. James Thompson is listed as a clerk in a grocery store. By 1920, the census shows Samuel working as a "sawyer" in a sawmill and James Thompson, still living at home, working as a produce company salesman.
